How Matchup Engine uses data

Matchup Engine uses third-party data in some parts of the product. This page provides attribution and source information where relevant to the data currently used.

Depending on the source, Matchup Engine filters, joins, aggregates or models the data to produce its own analysis and product outputs. The ratings, rankings, grades, probabilities and written analysis on this site are Matchup Engine's own outputs. They are not published, reviewed or endorsed by any data provider, league, competition, club or team, and a source's inclusion here does not mean it endorses Matchup Engine.

Third-party data may be delayed, revised or corrected by its publisher after we have used it. We make reasonable efforts to reflect relevant changes, but published analysis may not update immediately.

NFL data

Core data — nflverse. NFL statistics, play-by-play, rosters and player identifiers, schedules, injury information and depth-chart data are obtained from the open data releases published by the nflverse project (nflverse on GitHub; dataset releases at nflverse-data). Applicable nflverse material is distributed under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International licence (CC BY 4.0). Matchup Engine has modified this material: it is filtered, joined, aggregated and modelled to produce the ratings and analysis shown on the site, and the original releases are not republished here. nflverse does not endorse Matchup Engine or its use of the data.

Some nflverse datasets incorporate information that originates from other publishers, including official league injury reports and third-party depth-chart and statistical sources. Matchup Engine obtains that information only through the nflverse releases and does not license it directly from, or claim any association with, the original publishers.

Game spread and total. The game spread and total shown on NFL game and player cards, and used in the scoring-environment component of the rating, are taken from the nflverse schedules dataset. They are indicative pre-game market figures; the specific bookmaker they reflect is not identified in the source data and Matchup Engine does not attribute them to any bookmaker.

Player-prop market information. Player-prop lines shown for NFL content are consensus figures aggregated from United States sportsbook markets through The Odds API. These figures are reference information: they reflect overseas markets, may not be available or lawful in your location, and may change at any time. Matchup Engine does not name or link to the bookmakers behind them.

Artwork and names

Team and competition names are used to identify the subject matter of independent analysis. Team artwork on Matchup Engine is original illustration created for the product. It is unofficial and does not reproduce any league, club or team logo, wordmark or official design. Third-party names, marks and data remain the property of their respective owners.
